How important are the employees?

水能载舟 亦能覆舟 Shuǐ néng zài zhōu yì néng fù zhōu

English meaning: Water may keep the boat afloat but also may sink it

This proverb dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, a time when small kingdoms frequently rose and fell. Observers began to analyze the factors contributing to a nation's prosperity or decline. They likened the relationship between a ruler and the people to that of a boat and water, illustrating that while a ruler may govern, he is also reliant on his subjects. With the support of the people, a ruler can achieve success; without it, his reign may falter.

During the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong learned from the failures of the preceding Sui Dynasty and recognized the significance of prioritizing the welfare of the people. Unlike many rulers throughout history who focused on the interests of the ruling class, he emphasized the importance of serving his subjects. His insightful understanding of the relationship between the ruler and the ruled not only facilitated effective governance but also ushered in one of the most prosperous eras in Chinese history.

When applying this wisdom to the modern business landscape, the owner and employees can be likened to a boat and the water that supports it. Simon Sinek, a renowned researcher in leadership, emphasizes that effective leaders adopt a mindset centered on supporting their employees and fulfilling their needs. Rather than viewing themselves as the "ruling" authority, these leaders prioritize serving their teams. The underlying principle is that when leaders, managers, or anyone in a management role prioritize the well-being of their people, those individuals, in turn, will take care of the organization. This insight aligns seamlessly with ancient Chinese wisdom.

Personally, I am a great admirer of Simon Sinek. Each time he reveals new insights into effective business and organizational practices through his scientific approach, I feel a surge of excitement. This enthusiasm partly stems from the fact that his findings consistently validate the ancient wisdom of Chinese culture. While I take pride in this rich cultural heritage and its timeless teachings, I firmly believe that valuable human wisdom should be shared globally to foster a better work environment for everyone in the world. If you find this knowledge beneficial, please share it widely.
